The 2013 MTV Music Awards in Brooklyn, NY is a wrap and RSD was on hand to witness all of the madness. We thought for sure Jay-Z was going to make an appearance and do a surprise performance at the end of the night and bring down the house but no dice. However, there were some epic performances by Kanye West, Lady Ga Ga, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake.
The MTV Music Awards were in a new location and have a new look but it feels like the moon man has lost a bit of his swagger. Cool new award design but all genres of music were not well represented.
Rock, Electronic Dance and Indy were an afterthought replaced by pop and the Miley Cyrus teddy bear show which was just weird. 30 Seconds To Mars represented the rock genre and won the award for “Rock Video of the Year” beating out Indy rockers Vampire Weekend, Mumford & Sons and Imagine Dragons but there no true rock bands in the building. Don’t get us wrong, Justin Timberlake’s performance was sick and may be the highlight of the show BUT overall musicianship seems like it has taken a backseat to grandeur.
Big ups to Macklemore for being the only independent artist in hip-hop nominated for an award and who dominated by bringing home three overall awards without record label support including “Hip-Hop Video of the Year,” beating out Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Macklemore’s success shows that you can succeed as an independent artist in today’s social media driven music industry and redefine the lines. He proves that with the right ideas, game plan, network and people around you that anything is possible. He embodies what RSD is all about, follow your dreams and you will find a way to make it happen. Congrats to all of the winners.
